HOCKEY PLAYERS NAMED TO NFHCA’S 2002 NATIONAL ACADEMIC SQUAD
MANSFIELD- Five members of the Mansfield University field hockey team have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) 2002 NCAA Division II National Academic Squad.
Junior Heather Long (Pottsville, PA/Pottstown), senior Gretchen Reschke, (Owego, NY/Owego Free), freshman Amy Laubach (Mifflinville/Central Columbia), freshman Holly Frederickson (Woodbine, MD/South Carroll) and freshman Amanda Bliss (Marathon, NY/Marathon Central) were all honored for their academic achievements.
To earn NFHCA honors each athlete had to achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2002-2003 academic year.
The Mountaineers were also successful on the pitch posting a 10-7 overall record.

Free) set her final field hockey record today – and she didn’t even
play a game
Reschke
became the first player in any sport in Mansfield University history to earn
All-American honors for the fourth straight time when she was named to the STX/NFHCA
NCAA Division 2002 First-Team All-American squad. The team was released by the
National Field Hockey Coaches Association today
The first player in school history to earn first-team
All-American honors last season, Reschke repeated that milestone this year.
Named to second team All-American honors on offense her freshman and sophomore
seasons, Reschke was named as a defensive midfielder this time around.
“What a great honor for a great player,” said
Mountaineer head coach Diane Monkiewicz. “It is rare for a player to be named
an All-American even once. To earn it four times speaks volumes about her as a
player and individual. She is someone you just can replace.
After setting every Mansfield University season and career
scoring record her first three seasons, Reschke moved from offense to defense
this year. Still she finished fourth on the team in points (13), with a team
high seven assists and three goals
The best player ever to compete on the hockey pitch for the
Mountaineers, Reschke shattered the school record for goals (20) and points (47)
her freshman season. As a sophomore, she led the team in points (31), assists
(9) and goals and was the PSAC assists leader. After moving to midfield during
her junior, Reschke nine goals with seven assists.
She holds the school records for career goals (43), assists
(29) and points (115) while leading the Mountaineers to a school record 39 wins
over the course of her career.
The daughter of Donald and Stella Reschke of Owego, Gretchen will graduate with a degree in biology.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: GRETCHEN RESCHKE BECOMES FIRST MOUNTAINEER TO EARN FIRST TEAM ALL-PSAC HONORS FOUR TIMES-BROOKE FRONCZKEWICZ NAMED TO SECOND TEAM HONORS
MANSFIELD – Gretchen Reschke (Owego,NY/Owego Free Academy) become the first player in Mansfield University history to be named to 1st Team All-PSAC honors four times, and Brooke Fronczkewicz (Luzerne/Wyoming Valley West) was named to second team honors as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released the 2002 All-PSAC Field Hockey Team this afternoon.
Reschke is the only four-year first team selection on the 2002 All-PSAC Field Hockey team. The senior earned all-conference this season at midfield after being a three-time selection at forward her first three seasons.
A starter in every game during her career, Reschke had a team best seven assists this season – fourth best in the PSAC – and three goals. Over the course of her career, Reschke owns the school records for goals (43), assists (29) and points (115).
A three-time All-American and three time MU Presidential Scholar-Athlete, Reschke is the daughter of Stella and Donald Reschke of Owego and will graduate with a degree in biology.
Fronczkewicz was the anchor of the defense this season and also scored four goals with three assists. A four-year starter, Fronczkewicz was a co-captain this season. In 66 games during the course of her career, she scored seven goals with six assists.
The daughter of Suzanne and Mark Fronczkewicz of Luzerne, Brooke is a majoring in communications.

FAILS TO GET ECAC BID TO DEFEND TITLE
MANSFIELD
– The Mansfield University field hockey team ended its 2002 season this
afternoon – not on the playing field, but in a conference call with members of
the ECAC Division II Field Hockey Selection Committee.
The
ECAC released bids for the 2002 ECAC Division II Field Hockey Championship this
afternoon, but the defending champion Mansfield University Mountaineers would
not be listed among the chosen.
Mansfield,
which just missed the PSAC playoff’s last week when Shippensburg beat East
Stroudsburg, finished with a 10-7 mark – the second best in school history.
Stonehill
College will host the tournament as the #1 seed with Assumption College the #2
seed and East Stroudsburg University the #3 seed. The fourth and final send went
to C.W. Post.
Mansfield
beat Assumption in last year’s ECAC title game also hosted by Stonehill.

MANSFIELD
– The Mansfield University field hockey team moved up to eighth place in this
week’s NFHCA/STX NCAA Division II National Field Hockey Poll.
The Mountaineers posted a 2-0 record last week with wins over Slippery Rock and Southern Connecticut. The Mountaineers record improves to 10-7 overall.
Mansfield finished in 5th place and missed the PSAC playoffs by one game. Mansfield will have to wait until next week to see if they will get a bid to defend their ECAC crown.

5-1 win over Southern Connecticut University.
MANSFIELD—Mansfield University received goals from Kristen Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia), Kristi Swartz (Fairfield/Fairfield), Christine Thiers (Royersford/St.Pius X) and Teri Tressler (Newport/Newport) in a 5-1-season finale victory over Southern Connecticut Sunday afternoon at Spaulding field.
The Mounties were the first to score midway through the first half when Campbell scored off an assist from Chelsea Phillips (Ephrata/Ephrata) to give the Mounties a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later Swartz connected on an unassisted goal giving the Mounties a 2-0 advantage. With less than two minutes to play in the first half Swartz struck again this time scoring off a pass from Tressler to give the Mounties a 3-0-halftime lead.
Midway through the second half of play Southern Connecticut got on the board when Lori Rubino scored off a pass from teammate Krista Baron to cut the lead to 3-1.
Mansfield would respond later in the half when Thiers scored a goal off an assist from Gretchen Reschke (Owego, NY/Owego Free). With under a minute to play in regulation Reschke would assist Tressler with a goal to secure the Mounties 5-1 win.
With the win the Mounties finish the 2002 season with a 10-7 record.

MANSFIELD-
Mansfield University received a four-goal performance by Kristi Swartz
(Fairfield/Fairfield) in a 7-0-shutout victory over Slippery Rock
University in PSAC field hockey action Wednesday afternoon at Spaulding Field.
Swartz
scored her first of four goals in the first minute of the game to give the
Mounties a 1-0 lead. Minutes later the Mounties received a goal from Kristen
Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) off an assist from Teri
Tressler (Newport/Newport).
Swartz
added two more goals before the first half ended to give Mansfield a 4-0
advantage entering the second half.
Less than ten minutes into the second half Swartz added her fourth goal of the game off a pass from Campbell. Swartz, became the second player in school history to score 40 career goals, she now has 41.
Later
in the half, Mansfield received two more goals from Brooke Fronczkewicz (Luzerne/Wyoming
Valley West) and Tressler to complete the 7-0 shutout.
The
Mounties goalie Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove) recorded her
fourth shutout of the year in goal.
With
the win the Mounties conclude the PSAC season with a 4-4 record in the PSAC and
will await the outcome of the Shippensburg/East Stroudsburg game on Friday.
If Shippensburg loses the Mounties will clinch their first ever PSAC
playoff berth.
Mansfield's
last home game of the year is noon at Spaulding Field against Southern

– The Mansfield University field hockey team retained it’s ninth place
ranking in this week’s NFHCA/STX NCAA Division II National Field Hockey Poll.
The
Mountaineers posted a 1-1 record last week and are 8-7 overall. Mansfield has
two games remaining in the regular season, hosting Slippery Rock University on
Wednesday and Southern Connecticut on Sunday.
The
Mountaineers are 3-4 in the PSAC and are battling for the fourth and final
playoff spot in the conference. Mansfield must beat Slippery Rock while
Shippensburg falls to either Millersville or East Stroudsburg for the
Mountaineers to earn their first every PSAC playoff berth.

WITH A 5-1 VICTORY OVER MERRIMACK
Mansfield -- Mansfield University broke a 1-1 halftime deadlock to defeat Merrimack 5-1 at Spaulding Field. Merrimack’s Alison Crawford scored an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the game but that is all the Mountaineers would allow. Senior Gretchen Reschke (Owego, NY/Owego) got the Mounties on the board with a blast on a penalty kick.
Sophomore Jennifer Lechner (Rochester, NY/Brighton) scored the next two goals on assists from seniors Teri Tressler (Newport/Newport) and Kristi Swartz (Fairfield/Fairfield).
The Central Columbia connection of sophomore Kristen Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and sophomore Amy Laubach (Mifflinville/Central Columbia) rounded out the Mountie scoring. Swartz assisted Laubach’s goal.
Junior goalie Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove) recorded six saves.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD FALLS SHORT TO KUTZTOWN 4-3
KUTZTOWN—Kutztown University’s Rachel Gladfelter’s second half goal with 4:51 to play was enough to secure a 4-3 win over Mansfield University this afternoon.
Kutztown was first to score midway through the first half when Kristen Puzino scored off an assist from Gladfelter to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead in the first half.
The Mounties went on the board minutes into the second half when Teri Tressler (Newport/Newport) assisted Kristen Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) with a goal tying the game at 1-1. Less than a minute later Kutztown answered back when Rebecca Mooney scored a goal off an assist from Gladfelter and Puzino.
Mansfield would again tie the score midway through the second half when Gretchen Reschke (Owego,NY/Owego Free) scored off a penalty stroke shot. However, Kutztown would regain the lead again when Lauren McCabe scored Kutztown’s third goal of the game off an assist from Amanda Dein.
Dein would assist Gladfelter minutes later to give Kutztown a 4-2 advantage. Mansfield cut the lead to one when Brooke Fronczkewicz (Luzerne/Wyoming Valley West) scored with 3:52 to play off a penalty stroke. The Mounties were unable to rally for another goal as Kutztown held on to win 4-3.
With the win Kutztown improves to 5-11 and Mansfield falls to 7-7 on the season.

The Mountaineers have won five of their last eight games to improve to 7-6 on the season.
Mansfield travels to Kutztown this Thursday before returning home to host Merrimack College on Saturday.

OVERTIME
FARMVILLE,
VA – Twenty-four hours after stunning second ranked Shippensburg, the
Mansfield University Mountaineers saw a two goal lead evaporate in a
heart-breaking 5-4 double overtime loss to Longwood College.
The
Mountaineers took a 3-1 halftime lead on a Kristi Swartz goal off an assist by
Kristen Campbell less than three minutes into the game.
Mansfield went up 2-0 when Campbell scored off an assist by Gretchen
Reschke with 13:55 remaining in the half.
Longwood
would cut the score to 2-1 less then a minute later on a goal by Lorrie Watts
before Swartz would score again for Mansfield to end the half.
Sara
Grossi’s goal with 37:33 to play in the second half cut the score to 3-2
before Terry Tressler was credited with a goal with 24:53 remaining to give
Mansfield a 4-2 lead.
But
Longwood would storm back on goals by Alexis Ramey with 16 minutes to play and a
Sara Hichings goal with 3:01 remaining to tie the score at 4-4 at the end of
regulation.
After
a scoreless first overtime, Mansfield goalie Heather Long was issued a yellow
card and forced to sit out the first five minutes of the second overtime. Just
as Long was coming back into the game, Longwood’s Lori Watts slapped a shot
just inside the left post for the winning score.
Mansfield
falls to 7-6 overall while Longwood improves to 4-6.

SHIPPENSBURG- Mansfield University upset 2nd ranked Shippensburg University 1-0 Saturday afternoon off a penalty shot goal by Brooke Fronczkewicz (Luzerne/Wyoming Valley West).
During the first half of play the Mounties and Raiders were deadlocked at 0-0. The score would remain scoreless midway through the second half before Kristen Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) shot on goal, which would have went in, however a Shippensburg player fell on top of the ball.
The
play resulted into a penalty shot for the Mounties as Fronczkewicz scored her
second goal of the year and her second game winning penalty shot goal on the
year giving Mansfield a 1-0 lead with 12:59 left to play.
The Mounties would hold on to win 1-0, as goalie Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove) recorded 18 saves and her third shutout of the year.
With the win Mansfield improves to 7-5, as Shippensburg falls to 12-3.

BETWEEN TOP 10 TEAM’S
MANSFIELD
– East Stroudsburg scored two first half breakaway goals on their way to
defeating Mansfield University 3-0 in a PSAC matchup between nationally ranked
programs Tuesday afternoon at Spaulding Field.
East
Stroudsburg, ranked seventh in the country in NCAA Division II, used speed to
score on a breakaway with Antonia Giannopoulos putting the ball in the net off a
pass from Sara Groman. Jillian Ternosky scored seven minutes later off an assist
by Groman. With nine minutes to play, Groman scored an unassisted goal.
Mansfield,
ranked 10th in the latest NCAA Division II National Poll, had early
opportunities to score but could not get the ball into the net. East Stroudsburg
held a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal in the first half and a 21-5 advantage in
the second half.

– The Mansfield University field hockey team broke into the 2002 STX/NFHCA
Division II National Coaches Poll for the first time this season with a 10th
place ranking.
The
Mountaineers have won four of their last five games, including a 3-1 win over
nationally ranked IUP last week, to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Mansfield
will host seventh ranked ranked East Stroudsburg University this afternoon
starting at 4 p.m. at Spaulding Field before traveling to third ranked
Shippensburg University on Saturday.

Catawba
was forced to postpone the game because illness left them shorthanded.

MANSFIELD-Mansfield University received goals from Kristi Swartz (Fairfield/Fairfield), Kristen Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia), and Teri Tressler (Newport/Newport) to secure a 3-1 victory over 8th ranked Indiana University of Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon at Spaulding Field.
It didn’t take the Mounties long to get on the board when Swartz scored the games first goal off a pass from Brooke Fronczkewicz (Luzerne/Wyoming Valley West) 3:38 into the game.
The Mounties would score again during the middle of the half when Campbell scored a goal, which was assisted by Tressler. With 1:39 left in the first half, Tressler would score an unassisted goal to give the Mounties a 3-0 half time lead.
During the second half of play, Indiana’s Jill Kline, scored the first goal of the game for the Indians, seven minutes into the second half to cut Mansfield’s lead to two. Despite out shooting Mansfield 16-13, and holding the advantage over penalty corners, Indiana was unable to capitalize.
With the win the Mounties improve to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC.

Bloomsburg's Sheila Zilinski recorded a hat trick in a 8-2 victory over
Mansfield University this afternoon.
Mansfield
opened the scoring early as sophomore Kristen Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central
Columbia) scored an unassisted goal 3:37 into the game.
However, Bloomsburg responded minutes later when Shanna Fritz assisted
Steph Beck in a goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Later
in the first half Zilinski would score her first of three goals to give the
Huskies a 2-1 lead going into the second half.
In the second half Bloomsburg opened a 3-0 scoring drive with goals from
Zilinski, Shanna Fritz, and Marie Zorzi to take a 5-1 lead.
The
Mounties added a goal later in the half when senior Teri Tressler
(Newport/Newport) scored an unassisted goal.
The
Huskies would add three more goals in the second half as Bloomsburg went on to
defeat the Mounties 8-2.
Mounties

– Midfielder Kristi Swartz (Fairfield) scored the game-winning
goal off an assist by Chelsea Phillips (Ephrata) to lift the
Mountaineers to a 1-0 win over Millersville University in a PSAC field hockey
match Tuesday afternoon.
After
a scoreless first half, Swartz managed to power the ball past the goalie off a
penalty corner.
The
Mountaineers held an 11-4 advantage on shots on goal and Heather Long
(Pottstown) had five goalie saves in recording her second shutout of the
season for Mansfield.
Mansfield
improves to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC. The Mountaineers travel to second
ranked Bloomsburg on Saturday.

MANSFIELD-
Brooke Fronczkewicz (Luzerne/Wyoming Valley West) scored the games
winning goal off a penalty shot with three minutes remaining as Mansfield
University went on to defeat Franklin Pierce College 3-2 this afternoon.
The
Mounties Teri Tressler (Newport/Newport) scored the games first
goal with 6:30 remaining in the first half as the Mounties took a 1-0 lead going
into second half of play.
Franklin
Pierce tied the game minutes into the second half from a goal by Debbie Jones.
However, later in the half the Mounties responded when Kristen
Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) scored a corner goal off a pass
from Fronczkewicz regaining the lead 2-1.
The
Ravens responded with 8:16 to play, as Alissa Silverman scored off a pass from
Sarah Lavway, tying the game at 2-2.
With
three minutes to play, Franklin Pierce's April Demers received a yellow card for
unsportsman like conduct resulting in a penalty shot for Mansfield. The Mounties
Fronczkewicz, took the shot and scored the games winning goal.
With
the win the Mounties improve to 4-3 as Franklin Pierce falls to 0-5.
The
Mounties next game is 4p.m. Tuesday at Millersville University.

Fifth ranked Lock Haven University shutouts Mansfield University 2-0.
MANSFIELD-
Fonati Ward scored two goals as Lock Haven University out shot and outscored
Mansfield University 2-0.
The
game remained scoreless throughout the first half despite Lock Haven out
shooting Mansfield 19-3 in the first half.
The score would remain scoreless for a majority of the second half, until
Lock Haven's Fonati Ward scored off a pass from Kellie Kulina with 15:31 to
play.
Lock
Haven would add to their lead minutes later as Erika Grap assisted Ward on her
second goal of the game with 13:08 remaining.
Lock
Haven out shot Mansfield 42-7 as the Mounties goalie Heather Long
(Pottstown/Pottsgrove) recorded 26 saves in goal.

Marywood University at Pacer Field Thursday afternoon.
Celaschi
scored an unassisted goal at the 15:09 mark of the first half to give the
Mountaineers a 1-0 halftime lead.
Gretchen
Reschke scored her 42nd career goal 14:15 into the second half to
double the advantage before Kristen Campbell took a pass from Kristi Swartz for
the third goal of the game 10 minutes later. Swartz rounded out the scoring with
an unassisted goal.
Heather
Long stopped all five Marywood shots on goal in picking up the shutout.
The
Mountaineers outshot Marywood 24-6 and held a 17-3 advantage in penalty corners.

THIERS HAT TRICK LEADS MOUNTIES OVER MERCYHURST 3-2
Mansfield—
Christine Thiers (Pottstown) scored Mansfield University’s first hat trick of
the season.
The seesaw battle bounced back and forth between the
Mountaineers and the Lakers, each scoring two goals in the first half. The first
goal coming with an assist from Kristen
Campbell (Bloomsburg) at the 18:55 mark and an unassisted goal by Thiers
seven minutes later. The two Mercyhurst goals were by Fran Hollembaek and Sarah
D’Emilio.
Thiers unassisted goal midway through the second half
proved to be the winning goal.
The Mountaineer defense led by goalie Heather
Long (Pottstown) shutout the Lakers in the second half to seal the victory.
The Mountaineer win over Mercyhurst was impressive
considering Mercyhurst defeated last year Division II champs, Bentley College,
last week.
Mansfield will be on the road September 12, when they
take on Marywood University.

Assumption College revenged its loss to Mansfield in last year’s ECAC
Championship with a 2-1 victory over the Mountaineers Sunday afternoon at Marols
Field.
The
Mountaineers, who defeated Assumption 2-1 in last season title game, managed
just four shots on goal to 13 by Assumption, which also had a 14-2 advantage on
corners.
Assumption got off to a 2-0 on first half goals by
Kristin Garrity 11:38 into the game and a second goal by Courtney Petrillo at
the 21:10 mark.
Mansfield
scored :39 seconds later when sophomore Jennifer Lechner (Rochester,NY)
took a pass from senior Kristi Swartz (Fairfield) for the
Mountaineers first goal of the season.
Neither
team could score in the second half.

EUROPEAN TRIP
MANSFIELD
– The defending ECAC South Champion Mansfield University field hockey team
will make the program’s first ever trip abroad when they start a week long
preseason tour of Holland today.
Sixteen
players along with head coach Diane Monkiewicz departed for Holland on Sunday
and will play their first game against Goudse M.H.C on Tuesday night in Gouds.
The
team will play H.C. Klein Zwitserland at Wassenaar on Wednesday before traveling
to The Hauge on Thursday to play M.H.C. Zoeterdeer before facing L.H.C Roomburg
at Leiden of Friday.
The
Mountaineers posted a school record 13-7 mark last season capturing their first
ever ECAC title. The team returns 13 letterwinners, including the top four
scorers and goalie.
Mansfield
opens the defensive of their ECAC title when they travel to Bryant College (RI)
on August 31.

MANSFIELD – Mansfield University’s 2001 Championship ECAC
field hockey team will be honored at halftime of the Mansfield – Bloomsburg
men’s basketball game this Wednesday night at Decker Gymnasium.
Members of the team, along
with coaches and support staff, will be presented with ECAC Championship watches
during the ceremony.
The 2001 Mountaineer field hockey team under the direction of
head coach Diane Monkiewicz posted a school record 13-7 mark and earned the
program’s first ever post season bid with a berth in the ECAC Championship
Tournament.
Mansfield defeated C.W. Post 4-1 in the opening game of the
tournament and then rallied with two second half goals to down Assumption
College 2-1 in the title game.
Game time for the men’s contest is set for 8 p.m. with the
ceremony scheduled to take place at approximately 8:30 p.m.

CONFERENCE (PSAC) SCHOLAR-ATHLETE TOP 10.
MANSFIELD--
Mountaineer field hockey standout Lisa Bray (Richland/Tulpehocken)
has been selected as a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) 2001 Fall
Top Ten Scholar-Athlete. The 2001 PSAC Fall Top Ten Scholar-Athlete list was
released by the conference this afternoon.
Bray
becomes the first Mansfield Fall student-athlete to receive PSAC Top 10
recognition since the start of the program in 1997, and the fourth Mansfield
student-athlete to be selected as PSAC Top 10 Scholar-Athlete. Bray joins Scot
Wilcox (Spring 1998), Heather Nichols (Winter 1999-2000), and Matt Edwards
(Spring 2000) as PSAC scholar-athlete Top 10 selections.
All
nominees to the PSAC Fall Top Ten must have reached sophomore athletic and
academic standings, participated in at least 50% of the team's games or events,
and maintained a 3.25 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
In
the past year 1,013 student-athletes from the 14 PSAC institutions earned PSAC
scholar-athletes honors. Out of
those 1,013 student-athletes with a GPA of over 3.25, only 30 of the most elite
are named to PSAC Top 10 honors (Fall, Winter, Spring).
Bray,
a computer science major, finished her career with a 3.87 cumulative GPA.
This
season, Bray started all twenty games and helped lead her team to their
first-ever postseason bid where they won the ECAC Division II Championship.
A team captain, Bray was the top defensive player on the team and was a
two-time All-PSAC Second Team selection.
The
senior, a four-year starter and a four-year letter winner, is a three-time PSAC
Scholar-Athlete and Mansfield University Presidential Scholar-Athlete.
She has twice been named to the NFHCA NCAA Division II Academic Team.
Bray
is the daughter of John and Marcia Bray of Richland.

HOLLAND NAMED MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY 2001 FALL ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
MANSFIELD
– Kristi Swartz (Fairfield/Fairfield), who helped lead the
Mountaineers to their first ever ECAC Field Hockey Championship, and Dan
Holland (Scranton/Bishop O’Hara), a standout on the football
team, have been named the 2001 Mansfield University Fall Female and Male
Athletes of the Year.
A
junior, Kristi Swartz proved to be the most consistent performer
for the Mountaineer offense during the entire course of the 2001 ECAC
Championship campaign.
The team leader in goals scored for the second straight
season, Swartz recorded four multi goal games and played some of her best hockey
when facing national ranked programs. She scored the team’s only goals against
national ranked IUP and Bloomsburg while scoring the game winner in overtime
against national ranked Bryant College.
The
only Mountaineer to be ranked in the Top 10 in the PSAC in both goals (12) and
points (28) this season, Kristi became just the eighth player in school history
to earn All-PSAC honors.
An All-PSAC 2nd team selection earlier this year, Swartz is the daughter of Walter Swartz of Fairfield and is a communications major at Mansfield.
A
sophomore linebacker, Holland became the first male athlete to earn the honor in
each of his first two seasons.
After
recording the most productive freshman season for a defensive player in
Mountaineer history, Holland repeated that degree of excellence as a sophomore
this year.
For
the second straight season, Holland led the team in tackles compiling102 during
the campaign while racking up 10 or more tackles on five different occasions.
Holland
led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in solo tackles with 68 on the
season while also recording the third highest total in all of NCAA II.
Not
only were Holland’s 102 tackles the most in the PSAC East, he also lead the
division in tackles for a loss with 14. In addition, Dan was credited with three
sacks, an interception, and four pass breakups while forcing and recovering two
fumbles.
Holland,
who was named to both 1st All-PSAC East and ECAC Division II South
honors this season, becomes the first player in school history to be selected to
PSAC East and ECAC South 1st Team honors each of his first two
seasons.
The
son of Donna and Joe Holland of Scranton, Holland is majoring in special
education at Mansfield.

Reschke,

Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II All-America Team.

BOTH GOALS IN 2-1 COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN OVER ASSUMPTION TO EARN MVP HONORS
NORTH EASTON, MA – It was a red-letter day in the history
of the field hockey program at Mansfield University.
Freshman Jennifer Lechner (Rochester,NY/Brighton)
scored two second half goals to rally Mansfield University to a 2-1 win over
Assumption College in the 2001 ECAC Division II Field Hockey championship game
at Stonehill College Sunday afternoon.
“What a great day and great accomplishment for this
team,” said head coach Diane Monkiewicz just after being doused
with the team water cooler. “We started off a little slow in the first half,
but kicked it up and ran on pride the second half to rally. They (the players)
just refused to be denied this championship.”
Assumption got off to an early start when Stephanie Fleming
scored the game’s first goal off an assist from Kristin Garrity just five
minutes into play, while the Mountaineers could do little offensively in the
first half.
“There was no panic after the first half,” said
Monkiewicz. “During halftime we just talked about the game and how we had come
back to beat Assumption earlier this season. I don’t think anyone doubted we
could do it again.”
Lechner was credited with the tying goal off a long assist
from back Dana Niman (Newport/Newport) at the 15:20 mark of the
second half.
Just over five minutes later, Lechner took another long pass,
this one from back Crissy Nugent (Vestal,NY/Vestal) for what
proved to be the game winning score with 9:47 remaining.
Assumption tried to rally with a furious onslaught with five
minutes to play, but MU’s Ashley Celaschi (Myerstown/ELCO)
recorded a defensive save and goalie Heather Long (Pottstown/Pottsgrove)
had three straight stops in the net to seal the victory.
Assumption out shot the Mountaineers 12-7 but Long had eight
saves.
It was a career day for freshman Jennifer Lechner, who had
scored just one goal this season prior to the championship game, as she was
named the ECAC Division II Field Hockey Championship Tournament MVP for her
outstanding performance in the title game.
The championship capped off a record breaking season for the
Mountaineers who finished the year with an 13-7 overall record, breaking the
previous record for wins in a season (9) by four.
It was also the first ever post season competition for the
Mansfield University field hockey program.
