RELEASE DATE: 1/8/06 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Run Past Lock Haven in Second Half for 103-88 Win – Seniors DeShields, Hoopes, Collazo and Martin combine for 77 points
“We were looking for senior leadership this afternoon and we got it,” said head coach Rich Miller. “The seniors were impressive. They found each other and they made the plays when they had to.” The Mountaineers set a torrid pace right from the beginning, jumping out to a 8-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game behind 3-pointers from David Hoopes and Terrance Williams. Lock Haven managed to keep up with the pace and actually took a 26-22 lead on a layup by Ryan Carson with just over eight to go in the half. But Mansfield retook the lead on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes keyed by two 3-pointers by Hoopes before settling for a 43-37 advantage at halftime. “David (Hoopes) really had a good weekend for us,” said Miller. “He hit key baskets in both games and our guys got the ball to him when he got hot.” Lock Haven cut the lead to 43-41 a minute into the second half, but that was as close as they would ever come. Mansfield used a 17-3 run with seniors Andrae Martin, Hoopes, DeShields and Carlos Collazo scoring all 17 points., “Obviously we need a win and our seniors
delivered it today,” said Miller. “With all the close losses over the The up tempo game saw both team shoot better than 50% from the floor while the Mountaineers hit 70% (30-43) of their free throws for the first time in the last five games. Mansfield snapped a five game losing streak with the win. Four of those five losses came by six or less points with four decided by two or less points. While Hoopes and fellow guard Brandon DeShields were hot from the outside, Collazo had one of his best games of the season inside, recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He also had two assists and blocked two shots. DeShields scored a game high 25 points while dishing out seven assists and three steals. Hoopes had 23 points and hit six 3-pointers. Martin had 11 points with seven rebounds. Toby Gamble come off the bench to lead five Lock Haven players in double figures with 19 points. James Chappell scored 18 with Michael Dye adding 17, Billy Arre 15 and Ryan Carson 12.
