RELEASE DATE: 1/07/06 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: IUP HOLDS ON FOR 100-94 WIN – DAVID HOOPES TOPS FIVE MOUNTIES IN DOUBLE FIGURES WITH 18 POINTS
“I thought that for the most part we played well,” said head coach Rich Miller about his Mountaineers who have lost five games by six or less points. “In the last couple of minutes we got the looks that we wanted and put ourselves in position but just could get the ball to go in.” It was a hard played game throughout with just one double-digit lead by either team over the 40 minutes. The Mountaineers jumped out to a early 6-0 lead, but IUP’s Eddie Peterson – the PSAC’s leading scorer – scored all of his teams first 14 points and 21 of their first 26 points before Mansfield retook the lead 28-27 on a 3-pointer by Brandon DeShields nine minutes into the game. IUP outscored Mansfield 6-0 over the final two minutes of the half to take a 51-45 advantage into intermission and then scored the first four points of the second half for a 55-45 lead. But Mansfield would come right back with their own 11-0 run to retake a 56-55 lead on a layup by Carlos Collazo a little over four minutes into the second half. The game would remain close for much of the rest of the game with 10 ties or lead changes until IUP pulled away for a 88-81 advantage with 3:41 to play. The Mountaineers chipped away pulling to 94-93 on a jumper by Justin Kress with :59 to play but could not hit another shot. “You are not going to win close game by not shooting free throws well and that happened to us again today,” said Miller. “We were just 12-22 from the line and that was pretty much the biggest statistical difference in the game.” Senior David Hoopes led five players in double figures with 18 points including five 3-pointers. Andrae Martin added 16 points with Brandon DeShields scoring 14, Carlos Collazo 12 and Justin Kress 10. Terrance Williams and John Hampton each had nine points. Eddie Peterson led IUP (8-2) with a game high 26 points whith Lawrence Baker scoring 17. Marc Williams had 15 points and tied the IUP school record with 14 assists. Mansfield falls to 4-6 and will host Lock Haven Sunday at 3 p.m. in Decker Gymnasium.
