FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Hoopes 3-pointer with 1.3 Remaining Lifts Mansfield to 82-80 Win Over Millersville

Mansfield – David Hoopes 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left lifted Mansfield to a 82-80 win over Millersville in the Mountaineers PSAC East opener Wednesday night at Decker Gymnasium.

“I’m glad I got the chance,” said Hoopes after the game. “Chris (Greene) penetrated to the baseline and then kicked it out to me and I had a good look. I’m happy it went it. I don’t know if Coach Miller could take another close loss.”

It marked the seventh time this season the Mountaineers have been involved in games that ended in three or less points. MU had lost the last three of them by a combined five points.

Mansfield led 42-32 at halftime and took a game high 47-32 lead two minutes into the second half before Millersville would come roaring..

Millersville went on a 25-8 run over the next seven minutes to take a 58-55 lead on a 3-pointer by Jeremy Gwyn at the 11:30 mark.

The lead changed or tied 15 times over the last 11 minutes. With the game knotted at 76-76 and 1:12 to go the Mountaineers were called for a technical foul and Greg Testa hit both free throws to put Millersville in the lead.

Andrae Martin hit a layup with :41 and the ensuring free throw to put the Mountaineers up 79-78. Greg Testa’s jumper with :21 left gave Millersville a 80-79 advantage and Millersville was called for an offense foul setting up Hoopes dramatic finish.

“It feels a whole lot better being on this side of the scoreboard after one of these,” said head coach Rich Miller. “We played pretty good defensively over the last couple of minutes and David just came through when we needed him. It’s a big win for us and everyone contributed. Chris Greene did a great job dishing out six assists without turning over the ball.”

Hoopes final three was his sixth of the night after going 5-5 on 3-point attempts to start off the game, Hoopes missed his next six attempts before canning the winner.

Hoopes led four Mountaineers in double figures with 21 points with fellow guard Brandon DeShields scoring 15 points. Justin Kress and John Hampton scored 11 points each.

Millersville was led by Charlie Parker with a career high 33 points. Greg Testa added 18 points and Kevin Cuff 10.

Mansfield travels to West Chester this Saturday.
